Hello Dialog,
I would like to use pcb antenna to reach maximium coverage by using max output power. Do you have recommand antenna matching DA14580 which I can follow/copy it?
Besides antenna and matching networks, what voltage/Vcc can provide max output and highest sensitivity?
Communicating with smarrphpone (such as iphone5s, what parameter is more important -- Output power or Sensitivitt?
Based on your range externder doc, the sensitivity can reach better than -94dBm. It looks that the sensitivity improved not too much. Please advise.
Thanks,
Alex
Hi Alex,
antenna matching must be done for each board version seperately.
In case you copied one of the reference designs, using same substrate and thickness, same ground area, same antenna pattern: you could also copy the matching component values.
That will bring you close to the optimal matching situation.
The output power and sensitivity are not influenced by supply voltage levels. The RF circuits are supplied via LDO's.
Output power and sensitivity are both important: the link budget is what is counting:
0 dBm output power, -93 dBm sensitivity gives you a link budget of 93 dB.
But +10 dBm output power and sensitivity of -83 dBm also gives you a link budget of 93 dB.
This allows for 93 dB signal loss, whichtheoreticallywould give you a LOS range of ~ 100 m.
The range extender increases the output power to + 7dBm, giving a link budget of about 98 dB.
Theoretically this would result in a LOS range of about 200 meters.
Hope this helps you.
Best regards, BB_Dialog.
Thanks BB.
The extender can improve the sensitivity 3-4dB? By communicating with iPhone that output is fixed, the rang externder need to improve the sensitivity as well so that the communication can reach longe distance. Do you have experence on increase the distance between DA14580 and iPhone? what's iPhone's max output power, still at 0dBm or 4dBm?
Thanks,
Alex
Please read following website article, it's quite interesting. Dealing with antennas.

Hi Alex,
we don't know the iPhone's output power or whether it can be changed.
The range extender only increase the DA14580 output power upto + 7dBm.
That theoretically increases the LOS range by at least a factor two.
The receiver still will see the same received signal strength at that double distance.

Thanks BB.
I worry about that no range exteneded after using range extender for communicating with phone. See the case: by using range extender at DA14580 side, which extender 2x for transmission. but for smartphone which output can't be increased, DA14580 side without sensitivitt improvement, the signal from smartphobe can't be received after double distance. am i right?
TI has new range extender with 3dB sensitivity improved, which can be used for DA14580?
If using 3-5dB gain antenna, it will be good for both tx and rx. Any advices?
Thanks
Hi Alex,
确实你是对的。如果手机具有0DBM输出,DA14580可能无法在双距离处收到。
Antennas with high gain are direction sensitive antennas. They have high gain in a certain given direction, but
在其他角度,它们将显示出更低的数字。
If the TI range extender has exactly the same control signals, it could be used, but I doubt that strongly.
The indicated 3dB sensitivity improvement is probably only valid for certain Range-Extender - BLE-chip combinations.

Hi,
We have Dialog IoT sensor kit. we tested the board and it supports maximum of 5 meter but our application needs maximum of 30 meter but we dont want to connect external Antenna as our custom board will be very small like DA14580 IoT board. So Is there any external circuit which we can add to DA14580 to increase the range or please let me know what is the suitable TI range extender for DA14580 and its part no. kindly support for this issue
